Sunderland to hand Poyet new contract

Sunderland are ready to hand manager Gus Poyet a new deal.

Poyet has managed to give Sunderland a fighting chance of beating the drop after taking over from Paolo di Canio earlier this season.

Coupled with their run to the Capital One Cup final and Poyet has convinced Sunderland chairman Ellis Short of his long-term prospects.

The Sun says Sunderland are set to offer Poyet a new deal - after just five months in charge.
