Sunderland fullback Bardsley shock England contender

Sunderland fullback Phil Bardsley is a shock contender for an England World Cup place.

The Daily Star says England boss Fabio Capello is sweating on who to choose as his second-choice right-back in South Africa next summer.

The FA were left embarrassed by Luke Young earlier this month after the Aston Villa full-back ignored pleas to come out of international retirement for the friendly defeat against Brazil.

And Bardsley has managed to play his way into Capello’s thoughts after a string of impressive displays for Steve Bruce’s side this season.

A Sunderland source said: “Phil is starting to get international recognition for his performances.

“The England staff have been checking up on Darren Bent but have also liked what they have seen in Phil.”
