Sunderland are eyeing Hamburg defender Michael Mancienne.
The Mirror says Mancienne, 26, wants to head home after a three-year stint in Germany with Hamburg.
And the Black Cats are the front-runners ahead of Stoke, Swansea, QPR and Championship-bound Fulham to seal a bargain £1million deal.
Sunderland's sporting director Lee Congerton plans on being reunited with Mancienne and has recommended the versatile defender to boss Gus Poyet.
