Sunderland have failed with a new offer for Wigan Athletic midfielder Lee Cattermole.

The Daily Mail says Wigan have rejected an improved £6million offer from Sunderland for midfielder Cattermole.

Former Wigan boss Steve Bruce is determined to sign the 21-year-old and initially offered £5m on Friday but Wigan are standing firm.

Tottenham and Liverpool maintain an interest that could tempt the player.
