FC Twente coach Steve McClaren is in the frame for the vacant manager's job at Ajax.
The former England manager has rebuilt his reputation by guiding Twente to second place in the Dutch Eredivisie in his first season in the Netherlands, says The Times.
Marco van Basten resigned after Ajax failed to qualify for the Champions League.
McClaren, who lost his job as the England manager in November 2007, is halfway through a two-year contract with Twente. As well as qualifying for next season's Champions League, Twente have also reached the Dutch Cup final, leading McClaren to be linked with a return to England at Sunderland and Middlesbrough.
