Sunderland are in talks with Estudiantes for star fullback Marcos Angeleri.
The People says Black Cats boss Steve Bruce wants to strike a £4million deal with Angeleri's club Estudiantes.
Bruce hopes to close the Angeleri move this week after his side were knocked out of the prestigious Copa Libertadores - clearing the way for his quick exit.
Black Cats No.2 Eric Black was in South America to watch the defender and now an offer has been made, with Estudiantes prepared to sell the 27-year-old.
Angeleri - omitted from Diego Maradona's World Cup squad - only missed out on a move to Italian side Bologna last summer because of a major knee problem. However, he has returned and proved his fitness. Sunderland have turned to Angeleri after being quoted a huge price for Alan Hutton by Tottenham at the end of his loan spell.
