Sunderland escape severe punishment after Ji plays unregistered

Sunderland have been fined by the Premier League for fielding an unregistered player earlier this season.

South Korean striker Ji Dong-won spent the second half of last season on loan with German club FC Augsburg before returning to the Stadium of Light in the summer.

The Black Cats played the 22-year old in four league matches of the 2013/14 campaign without international clearance before he joined Augsburg permanently in January.

Sunderland alerted the Premier League to the fact they had played an ineligible player and have now been hit with a fine but have escaped any further punishment.

Ji, who has played eight times for Augsburg since returning to Germany, will join Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season.
