Sunderland to escape FA rap over crowd trouble

Sunderland are set to escape any official action over the crowd disturbances during Saturday's derby victory over Newcastle United.

The Sun says rival fans clashed at the Stadium of Light with police making 29 arrests before and after the Black Cats' 2-1 win.

Newcastle's Joey Barton was pelted with coins and bottles as he warmed up while an officer from British Transport Police sustained a broken wrist trying to break up trouble.

A policewoman was also struck by a firework and Toon keeper Shay Given was menaced by two pitch invaders after Kieran Richardson's winner.

But an FA spokesman said: "The key issue is to work with the clubs and the police to ensure all of those involved in Saturday's disorder are identified and put through the courts to hopefully receive football banning orders.

"In the last few weeks, there have been some unfortunate incidents. We want to work with clubs and other agencies to ensure that they are not repeated in the future."
