The Black Cats had made a bid for the 27-year-old Romanian international earlier this month but Sunderland were unable to strike a deal with the player's club Steaua Bucharest, who were looking for more than £3million.

Despite their financial power, Sunderland were unwilling to pay more than their own valuation of the central defender.
