Sunderland defender Kader Mangane hopes to make up for lost time after making his debut in victory at Newcastle United.

Mangane was delighted at being given his first taste of action under new head coach Paolo Di Canio.

"It was good to play at last, it has seemed a long time," the 30-year-old told the Evening Chronicle.

"I have had to wait for my chance to play, but I have still enjoyed it here.

"It has been unfortunate to come and not be able to contribute or be given a chance.

"I have trained hard and perhaps I could have had a chance to play earlier.

"It has been a difficult three months.

"When you arrive at a new club and you do not play, it is a test mentally."
