Paddy McNair has revealed he was only sent to defence when Louis van Gaal took over at Manchester United.
The Northern Ireland international, who joined Sunderland in the summer, scored a match-winning brace for the Black Cats in their 2-1 EFL Cup triumph over Queens Park Rangers on Wednesday.
David Moyes insisted that McNair had come through United's academy as a midfielder, or number 10, which has been backed up by the player himself who blames his shift to the backline on van Gaal.
"Until I was 18, I played in midfield," McNair said.
"Van Gaal played me at centre-back. So a lot of people think I'm a defender but I've not really ever been a defender."
