Sunderland have moved quickly to play down reports that they are on the verge of signing former Manchester United striker Andy Cole.

Speculation has been mounting about a possible transfer ever since the former England striker was spotted in the stands watching the Black Cats' clash with Wigan at the weekend.

However, the club have moved to quash any speculation, with manager Roy Keane insisting Cole's appearance at the JJB Stadium on Saturday was merely "as a fan".

Meanwhile, claims that the 35-year-old has passed a medical at the Stadium of Light have also been rebuffed by the club.

"Andy Cole has not passed a medical and is not in the process of having one," said a club spokesman.
