Sunderland are being linked with Wigan Athletic winger Antonio Valencia.
The Daily Star Sunday says Real Madrid have pulled out of the race for Wigan's Ecuador winger - leaving Manchester United in pole position to clinch a near-£20m deal if they wish.
If not, former Wigan boss Steve Bruce - now at Sunderland - will move in.
