Sunderland boss Steve Bruce is determined to land Middlesbrough winger Adam Johnson in January.

Middlesbrough will cash in on Black Cats fan Johnson rather than risk losing the England Under-21 star for nothing in the summer, says The Sun.

Johnson, 22, who has hit nine goals this season, knows a swift return to the Premier League is his best hope of challenging for the full England squad.

He said: "I want to achieve as much as I can and play for the senior England team."
