The race for released Manchester United striker Michael Owen is heating up with the summer market now closed.

The Daily Mail says Sunderland are offering late competition to Stoke City in the chase to sign Owen.

The 32-year-old can sign outside of the window as a free agent and revealed on his Twitter account that he had been the subject of interest from two major European clubs but his preference is to stay in the Premier League.
