Sunderland chairman Quinn expecting quiet opening to summer market

Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn is expecting a lull in the opening weeks of the transfer market.

Paraguayan midfielder Cristian Riveros' arrival on a Bosman free transfer has been confirmed, but chairman Niall Quinn warned fans impatient for news that the transfer market will be pretty dead for the next few weeks.

"The season's just ended, anyone taking a holiday is taking it just now, then they're all going out to the World Cup so it hasn't been that active," he told The Journal.

"One or two agents have been offering players but in terms of what we feel we need, the (John) Mensah situation's a curious one for us because if you told me he'd play 38 games in a season I'd be over there right now to drive him here. That's an area we're looking at but we've not homed in on one (target) yet.

"I guess with Alan (Hutton) we need to have a Plan B. David Meyler's injury throws up a poser to us because he was superb and is now going to miss 50% of next season.

"We'll keep our eye on stuff other than that."
