Sunderland skipper John O'Shea has likened new manager Paolo di Canio to Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

Di Canio's style in charge at Swindon was described as "management by hand grenade" by former Robins chief Nick Watkins.

But former Manchester United defender O'Shea, 31, said: "It's not a wacky world. I've been in football a long time and first and foremost the manager is just wanting to do his best for Sunderland.

"We're doing a lot of work without the ball, with shape and pattern. And that is similar to what we did with Alex Ferguson."
