Sunderland boss Gus Poyet insists Jack Rodwell will find consistency in his performances.
The big money signing from Manchester City is currently struggling for form.
Asked how long the player may take to fulfil his potential, Poyet said: "As soon as we start performing and winning games.
"He is better, he understands a few things better. I couldn't judge him for four games, I wanted him to have a few more to have a proper idea of what he was doing and what I need him to do better.
"Now we have got to that point, 10 games more or less. We have been doing a few things with him as well, which is good.
"It is up to him to start doing things on the pitch.
"He was good in the first home game and that is the image that the fans have got in their head in the moment, which is important. Time will tell."
