Sunderland boss Gus Poyet admits Emanuele Giaccherini has played his way into his first team plans.
Though he recognised the 29-year-old's quality, Poyet questioned whether he could adapt to English football and the way he wanted Sunderland to play.
But Poyet now says: "I have changed my mind completely about him and he has made me happy.
"Giacchi was one of those who suffered the most under the previous manager (Paolo Di Canio).
"It was difficult coming to a new country and then results not going well. He was one of the big signings and a lot was expected of him but it was a tough season for him.
"I think most footballers would have given up and gone home but he is not that kind of character.
"He took missing out on the World Cup in an incredible way.
"From the first day in pre-season training, you could tell he now wants to show who he really is. He was in the top three in every test."
