Sunderland boss Gus Poyet is desperate to land a centre-half signing.
Poyet is looking to strengthen his defence over the summer, says the Sunday Sun.
Carlos Cuellar was released at the end of the season while Sunderland are keen to offload Modibo Diakite and Valentin Roberge after they flopped last season.
If they follow Cuellar out of the door, that would leave the Black Cats with Wes Brown and John O'Shea as their only senior centre-backs.
