Sunderland boss Poyet explains blanking son Diego this week

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet admits has not spoken with son Diego this week ahead of meeting West Ham United.

The 19-year-old has been included in the Hammers' squad for Saturday's game at the Stadium of Light and could therefore line-up against his Poyet senior's team, although in reality he is likely to be on the subs' bench at best.

"He went back to West Ham last weekend and asked to play in the reserves, and I spoke to him on Monday after he had played in that game," said Poyet.

"But that's it. I didn't tell him that I won't call him, but I won't [do so]. I think it is better.

"I prefer not to call him, so that no-one can question it. I don't want him to think that I am calling him for team news or anything, so I'll avoid calling.

"I haven't even spoken to my wife about it! If I see him on Saturday, I will say hello but that's all.

"And then after the game, of course, it's over and we are back to normal!"
