Sunderland boss Gus Poyet is tightlipped on his January market plans.
The Black Cats have been linked with moves for Celtic defender Virgil Van Dijk and Liverpool striker Fabio Borini, who was on loan at the Stadium of Light last season.
But Poyet refused to acknowledge a move for either player despite admitting he was open to bringing players in in January.
"The idea is to add quality if possible, if not your better off adding nothing," he told Sky Sports.
"Unless there is tremendous quality which will change things for us then there will be nothing. We were already in talks with Virgil Van Dijk in the past, he's a player I know from a long time ago but there is a certain amount of money that you can or cannot have so I think it's too early.
"Fabio had a difficult summer and it's difficult now, very difficult to bring him to Sunderland."
