Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill hasn't yet decided over a new contract for Craig Gordon.
O'Neill reckons the 29-year-old will be in demand if he can prove his fitness - and has not ruled out the possibility of him staying on Wearside.
"If he is properly fit at the end of the season and raring to go, Craig Gordon will be in the driving seat rather than anything else. If he reaches anything like the form of previous times he will be in demand - from both ourselves and other clubs.
"As a goalkeeper, it is hard to prove your fitness. However, it does not mean I cannot find out through the training sessions.
"Craig has been a bit sore recently after his exertions, but once he is pain free then I think that is the time for me to make a judgement."He told the Sunday Sun: "I spoke to Craig recently about this and I still think he has to get himself absolutely fit.
