Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill is planning a raid on former club Aston Villa this month.
The People says O'Neill wants to sign midfielder Stiliyan Petrov from his old club Aston Villa.
But the Ulsterman has received no encouragement from current Villa chief Alex McLeish.
O'Neill may get more joy out of Big Eck in his bid to sign defender James Collins.
North-east rivals Newcastle are also thought to be keen on the 28-year-old.
