Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill feels James McClean deserves a Euros chance.
O'Neill accepts with Aiden McGeady, Damien Duff and Stephen Hunt all regulars in the Republic of Ireland squad, 22-year-old McClean is up against an abundance of experienced competition in wide positions, but the Sunderland boss believes the former Derry City winger still has an outside chance.
"My selfish focus here is just for him to do well for us. But if he can keep showing the outstanding form he has displayed since coming into our side then who knows what can happen. It is an incentive for him to keep up the high standards he has set himself and provides hope that his form gets him noticed." O'Neill said: "I'm hoping that there is still time for a door to open for him - that would be great. But I've not had conversations with Giovanni Trapattoni about anything. He is the manager and it is his prerogative to do what he wants.
