Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill accepted their 0-0 draw with Wolves.
The result was a disappointment for fans.
But the manager said: "It's just a reality-check, I think they are probably the words I am searching for, just get a grip on things.
"We have got work to do if we want to try to progress, which is what the club wants to do.
"We have pulled ourselves around from potential relegation to find ourselves - I hate to use the word and I don't think it's in the players' make-up, but if you are stuck there in mid-table, you might coast through to the end of the season.
"But we have work to do. It's obviously that we want to try to improve on what we have done, and that would be our ambition."
