Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill hailed goal scorer Phil Bardsley after their FA Cup draw at Everton.
Tim Cahill equalised but Sunderland held out to take the tie back to the Stadium of Light.
"Phil has done brilliantly to play today because he's had a rib injury the past few days after hurting himself in training," O'Neill told safc.com.
"Phil's got a great heart for the game and I'm delighted he played, he would never have thought anything else other than that and it was a really great effort from him.""He's done brilliantly to play the game and to play so well was an added bonus.
