Sunderland boss O'Neill: Gardner will not leave

Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill insists Craig Gardner is not for sale.

The former Birmingham City midfielder is wanted back at St Andrews, and by Midlands neighbours West Bromwich Albion, but O'Neill insists Gardner will not be allowed to leave the Stadium of Light before the transfer window closes on Tuesday.

O'Neill said: "He'll just have to be homesick for another couple of months at least. There have been inquiries about him but no-one has forced us to make a decision about him and I'd be pretty well certain that he'll stay beyond January and deep down he accepts that.

"He's prepared to give everything and he's become popular with the fans so I don't think any of us would like to see him go."
