Sunderland boss Keane: Big changes needed to take club forward

Sunderland boss Roy Keane admits he's raised his sights in the market as Premiership safety appears secured.

"Jose Mourinho tried to explain it one day when he said that when you go shopping, there are certain shelves you go to," said Keane. "We want to go to the good shops. I have one or two players in mind and they would make people sit up and take notice.

"Sunderland have struggled to get big names before. That is what I'm fighting, the mindset. But I want to bring in the right players with the right qualities and, without doubt, my range is higher now.

"I have reminded the chairman once or twice how much it will cost. It has to be backed up. Every manager can demand this or that but you have to get the right players in.

"I'm sure I could spend £200m in the summer. I'd love to spend it. People say it's not your money, but that's not the point. I still have pride in who I sign. We need to go to the next level in terms of shopping. But the top players want your 60, 80 grand a week. Trust me, we're way, way behind. You have to change the wage structure and people here are ready to do that - they have to be.

"Players want big money. Hopefully, the club will go and seal deals. We are raising our sights. You need quality in this League and we'll be way, way stronger next season.

"Would I go for Ronaldinho? Yes, I think so. You have to have an open mind. It is something I'd love to do. Whether it's this summer, well that would be fantastic. Whether he would come here is another matter. We have to live in the real world as well. But we have to believe that one we can compete if these players come available."
