Sunderland boss Paolo di Canio wants to sign permanently on-loan Tottenham fullback Danny Rose.

England Under-21 star Rose, 22, has already gone back to Spurs where he will have surgery on a problematic wrist this week.

He wants to fight for his place under Andre Villas-Boas at White Hart Lane next season.

But Di Canio said: "Danny has been fantastic for us.

"I don't know how much he will have to play at Spurs. We'll see what happens."
