Sunderland boss Di Canio: Mandron not ready for relegation battle

Sunderland boss Paolo di Canio says he cannot afford to risk Mikael Mandron in their relegation battle.

With Sunderland just five points above the relegation zone and with their top-flight status still hanging in the balance, Di Canio prefers to put his faith in experience.

The Italian said: "Mandron trained with us during the week and he has been on the bench.

"He is a player with promise and sometimes you can use him.

"However, we are at a crucial moment of the season and, as much as I can, I would like to keep the players with pedigree and experience in there.

"Mandron is still young, though, and you never know what might happen."
