Sunderland boss Paolo di Canio says he won't back down from having a pop at his players in public.

Sunderland boss Paolo di Canio says he won't back down from having a pop at his players in public.

In his press conference Di Canio picked up a print-out of Sir Alex Ferguson’s Harvard Business School report on managing Manchester United and jabbed a finger at one of the pages.

"Sir Alex Ferguson. Point No 4. Never, ever cede control," he said. "This is Paolo Di Canio. This is why I’m at the top level. This is the reality. I give stick to my players after a game if I believe they are wrong because Monday is too late."

Further citing Ferguson, he added: "Egos need a stick. Ferguson said that. They need a slap. Because they feel more protected. If 11 egos have a very weak manager they do what they want. If you have that you sink and sink and sink."
