Sunderland boss Bruce: Ken Loach has caught Man Utd legend Cantona perfectly

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce says Ken Loach's film 'Looking for Eric' captures former Manchester United teammate Eric Cantona perfectly.

Bruce admits he gets asked about what it was liking playing with Cantona more than any other question.

He told the Sunday Times: "Yesterday, my son Alex [a defender at Leicester City on loan from Ipswich] came round with the film Looking for Eric that director Ken Loach made with Cantona. If you're interested in the guy, you've got to see it. It has the feel of a Loach movie and Eric just plays himself. All the way through I'm thinking, 'Yeah, that's him, that's Eric'.

"In my entire life, I've never seen anyone with a presence like his. When he walked into a room, it went a deathly quiet. But the lads loved him because of his humility. He was different to the rest of us."

Bruce's favourite memory comes from the day before the 1994 FA Cup final against Chelsea.

"I had a feeling we would get a penalty in the game, and Eric was taking them for us. So I went to him and said, 'I've got a sneaky suspicion there's going to be a penalty tomorrow, you should hit a few now and be prepared'. He looked at me for a second, shrugged his shoulders and said, 'If I get a penalty, I score'.

"The next day against Chelsea we got two penalties and Eric strolled up, as if he was playing with his mates in a public park, and slotted them both into the same corner. Fantastic, he was."
