Sunderland boss Bruce: Hughton sacking will deter budding managers

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce believes this week's sacking of Chris Hughton by Newcastle United will deter budding young managers from getting into the coaching caper.

Bruce believes that players coming to the end of their careers and interested in management should think twice as it is such a tough business that even if you are getting results, you can be sacked as simply as Hughton was.

"It makes you wonder why I do it. We are in danger of not producing a young Mourinho, or a young Brian Clough. Decisions like the one with Chris must deter young British coaches," he said.

"If I was coming to the end of my playing career now and thinking about that route, I would think long and hard about it.

"How can you put your family through it? I've seen a change in the 10 or 12 years I've been involved and if I was coming to the end of my career and had a wonderful offer from Sky, as I did back then, I think I would take it and go on the media side."

And Bruce said that his club was one that was showing the way in sticking with what they know.

"There is stability at the top and I've got a chairman who understands football and knows there are times when it won't go our way. This club should be a real model for showing the way forward," he added.

"Look at the successful clubs - Everton have stuck with David Moyes and never looked back - and the role models are Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger."
