Sunderland boss Bruce grateful for Short backing in transfer market

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce is grateful for the backing he has received in the transfer market.

American owner Ellis Short's £30million funding of Darren Bent and Asamoah Gyan will propel ambitious Sunderland into the Premier League big time.

Bruce said: "When you think about how far the club has come in the last two or three years, we have to be thankful to the owner.

"Not many managers can boast that their two centre-forwards cost £30m between them. What the owner is trying to achieve is there for everyone to see.

"He is putting his hand in his pocket to take the club where he wants it to go and in that respect we are very fortunate - just as Aston Villa are, and Chelsea and Manchester City are, albeit at another level."
