Sunderland boss Bruce delighted Wickham scored first goal

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce was delighted seeing Connor Wickham get off the mark this week against Kilmarnock.

While Bruce has again warned against expecting too much of the youngster, he's excited by the raw talent his new acquisition has shown so far.

"The goal was nice for him because as a striker it's always good to get up and running," Bruce told safc.com.

"You can see the attributes Connor has - he's big, powerful but we have to remember that he's still only 18. He's the same age as Louis Laing.

"But he's a real good player and the goal will help him."

Bruce added: "Connor is still young and has a lot of learning to do but all the raw materials are there to work with.

"He's a big lad who's good in the air but he can move as well, and he took his chance very well."
