Sunderland boss Bruce challenges Colback, Waghorn

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has challenged Jack Colback and Martyn Waghorn to emulate the achievements of Jordan Henderson.

Waghorn signed on until the end of the season at Leicester yesterday and Bruce has revealed he's happy for Colback - currently at Ipswich - to do the same.

"Martyn and Jack are getting valuable experience in the Championship and I think that will do them the world of good," Bruce told safc.com.

"We've seen the benefit Jordan Henderson has had from time out on loan and the two lads will come back to us next season and be part of the squad.

"I think loans are absolutely essential for young players. They must get experience playing mens' football, as I call it, and they can't really get that at reserve-team level.

"Reserve teams are mostly extensions of the youth team these days - under-21 teams - so it's vitally important players go out and play competitive football.

"There's nothing quite like it and they need to get that experience at as young an age as possible.

"The aim is for Martyn and Jack to emulate Jordan. They will be part of our squad here next year and that vital Championship experience will do them the world of good.

"Whether they can make the same impact remains to be seen, but they have given themselves an opportunity."
