Sunderland boss Steve Bruce admits Asamoah Gyan has been signed to replace Stoke City striker Kenwyne Jones.
Gyan arrived from Rennes for a club record fee.
Bruce said: "We made a big decision to let Kenwyne Jones go, so I'm delighted to have got him. The club is going forward now. It's exciting and amazing that on the last day of the window we've pulled off a club record.
"We had to be patient, two weeks ago I didn't think it would happen.
"It's good that he's got John (Mensah) here, if he has anything like the impact John's had he'll be all right."
