Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce hopes to continue their transfer plans in the coming days.
Allardyce was putting the finishing touches to a £750,000 deal for Bayern Munich's Jan Kirchhoff on Thursday.
However, a proposal to sign fellow defender Lamine Kone from French side Lorient is dead after contract talks broke down.
“Jan is in the building, and we're hoping that will be completed later," he said.
"After that, we'll go to the next target in a different position. If that gets completed, then brilliant — and we'll see if we can get another one or two in after that."
