Sunderland are to appeal against Wes Brown's red card in the 2-0 league loss at Manchester United on Saturday. Referee Roger East appeared to dismiss Brown in error, as television pictures suggested John O'Shea had committed a foul on United striker Radamel Falcao.
Referees' body Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) said East thought Brown had fouled Falcao.
O'Shea appeared to pull the Colombian back but Brown was dismissed as both players challenged Falcao.
