Sunderland are ready to swoop for free agent James McFadden.

The Mirror says McFadden is training with Wolves after his contract with relegated Birmingham expired.

Cash-strapped Blues cannot meet McFadden's personal terms to re-sign after he recovered from a knee that sidelined him for almost all of last season.

The 28-year-old is keen to stay in the Midlands with his young family and hopes to switch to top-flight Wolves.

But Black Cats boss Steve Bruce is a fan, and McFadden could yet move north.
