Suarez victim of his own reputation - Liverpool's Gerrard

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard believes teammate Luis Suarez gets harshly judged by referees.

The Uruguayan striker has been labelled a 'diver' because of his possible flailing attempts to win free-kicks and penalties but Gerrard suggests that those few occasions have changed the minds of match officials.

Suarez went down in the box under pressure from Jonny Evans during the Reds' 2-1 loss to Manchester United on Sunday with closer footage showing that there was definite contact from the Irish defender and Gerrard is of the belief that referee Mark Halsey got it wrong.

"I think even when Luis does get blatant penalties now he doesn't get them," said Gerrard.

"It is down to referees to not judge him and give what they see - if it's not a penalty don't give him one but if it's clear give it.

"He was booked at Sunderland (last weekend) but against United it was a penalty."
