John Stones started for Everton in Wednesday night's Capital One Cup clash with former club Barnsley.
The 21-year-old kicked off the second round league cup fixture in the heart of defence alongside captain Phil Jagielka despite lodging a transfer request with the Toffees.
Stones is the subject of significant interest from Chelsea who are set to table a third bid for the England international.
It appears as though Stones wants to leave Goodison Park for Stamford Bridge after handing in the request but still Toffees boss Roberto Martinez is planning for life with the talented centre-half in his team.
"I think what's important is that these games we need to be well-balanced, fresh and get the right combination, and a partnership in the centre-half position is vital for us," the Spaniard told Sky Sports News HQ prior to the clash with the Tykes at Oakwell.
"Phil Jagielka and John Stones are really, really important in being able to have a good performance."
