Stokes' Hughes denies Ramsey injury being the reason for Shawcross-van Persie spat

Stoke City boss Mark Hughes has denied claims that Ryan Shawcross and Robin van Persie's row on the weekend is not because of an old incident which occurred when the Manchester United man was at Arsenal.

Potters skipper Shawcross and Dutch striker van Persie clashed during United's eventual 3-2 win on the weekend with reports suggesting the latter still has an issue stemming from the former's heavy challenge which broke Aaron Ramsey's leg back in 2010.

But Hughes refused to believe that this was the reason for the pair coming together at various stages at Old Trafford.

"I don't think that was the reason there was an incident but we haven't really discussed that in terms of detail and what was said so I can't enlighten you," said the Potters boss.

"Maybe there were a few petty things going on but they resolve themselves.

"Sometimes it's just better to get on with it. The half had finished and I would have thought the natural break in proceedings would have allowed everyone to calm down, which they did.

"In the second half there was no inclination from anyone on either side to carry on.

"It's just one of those things that flares up very quickly and is extinguished just as quickly."
