Stokes enjoying 'team' role at Celtic this season

Anthony Stokes may be well behind Celtic's leading scorer Kris Commons this season but that does not mean he has had a mediocre campaign.

The 25-year old Republic of Ireland international has scored 14 times in the Scottish Premiership for a total 15 goals this term, which has him well behind Commons' tally of 28.

However, the former Sunderland and Hibernian striker feels he has improved his game further up the pitch which has assisted the Hoops in winning a third straight Scottish title in 2013/14.

"I feel like I bring more to the team than just goals. If you look at my performances at Hibs, I scored a lot of goals but I wouldn't say I did a lot of work outside the box. I just tried to stay in there and score goals," he said.

"This season I have tried to mix it up. As a striker I still judge myself on goals and that's what counts, but I have tried to improve other aspects of my game.

"I feel I have brought more to the team but at the end of the season a lot of people won't remember that, they will just look at your stats. Sometimes stats can be a bit deceiving."

Stokes added: "In the last season or two the gaffer has asked me to become more of a team player and I think I have shown that this season.

"I actually kind of prefer it in a way, you get to see a bit more of the ball and get to make things happen."
