Stoke winger Pennant retains England hope

Stoke City winger Jermaine Pennant retains England ambitions.

He was distraught to be an FA Cup final loser at Wembley.

He said: "Everyone is devastated and gutted we couldn't lift the Cup. We've got next season now - we can hopefully build on this.

"I've never put England out of my mind. I'd love to play for England. All I can do is play well for my club and, hopefully, I'll get some recognition."

Pennant, now 28, became the country's most expensive teenager when Arsenal paid £2million to Notts County for him in 1999.

There had been rumours of contact with the Republic of Ireland as Pennant has Irish grandparents.

But he said: "Nothing's come up yet! Obviously I've got Irish family but that probably won't happen."
