Stoke winger Pennant: Arsenal far better when I was there

Stoke City winger Jermaine Pennant has taken a swipe at former club Arsenal.

Pennant was impressive in Stoke's thumping defeat of the Gunners on Sunday.

Although he played only 26 first-team games for Arsenal between 1999 and 2005, Pennant was contracted to the club when they gathered five trophies under Arsene Wenger.

He said: "They're a great team, a great passing side and against good teams, they really seem to come into their own.

"But when I was there, they had people like Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira and maybe they won't get back to that until they get one or two new players in. That team won the League, the FA Cup, the Double in 2002 when I was there. They were fantastic.

"Yesterday, we gave them time when they had the ball at the back but as soon as they got into our half we pressed and marked man for man. We were happy to let them pass at the back because that wasn't going to hurt us and they didn't give us too many problems until late in the second half."
