Stoke winger Etherington: Shawcross should be in England squad

Stoke City players do not know why Ryan Shawcross didn't make England's squad for the friendly with France.

Shawcross made it as far as the England bench for the friendly against Egypt last March and given last week's meeting with France was supposed to be an opportunity for Capello to explore some new options his failure to include the Stoke skipper was somewhat surprising.

So why was he not called up?

"You will have to ask Fabio Capello that," said Shawcross' Stoke teammate Matthew Etherington. "Maybe because he plays for Stoke City.

"It could be that because some of the players that were called up in his position you can raise an eyebrow at.

"It is down to one person and one person only. But he definitely deserves his chance without a doubt."

Having the benefit of watching Shawcross in training on a daily basis, Etherington is well placed to comment on his England credentials.

Would he let his country down?

"No chance, absolutely no chance," said Etherington. "He is that good. I mean that, I am not just saying that.

"He is that good. He has got to be close to an England call-up."
