Stoke win is what is required for top four - Liverpool's Gerrard

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard hailed his side following their thrilling 5-3 victory at Stoke City on Sunday.

The Reds produced their first league triumph at Stoke in more than 29 years in a fascinating contest which saw the visitors squander a two-goal lead before slipping away to a 4-2 ascendency prior to late goals from both sides.

After the match, skipper Gerrard spoke of the importance of beating the Potters after some difficult outings at the Britannia Stadium in recent years.

"It's big. Our record against Stoke in the league is poor away from home and we wanted to put that right today. I thought we showed tremendous character," Gerrard told Sky Sports.

"It's results like this we need if we want to finish in the top four."

He added: "The first 40 minutes we controlled the game.

"It was very comfortable then we went a bit soft, made a couple of mistakes, and it became a real tough game from then on."

The win kept Liverpool fourth on the table and sees them five points behind league leaders Manchester City and one ahead of Merseyside rivals Everton who sit sixth.
