Stoke City have placed a £1million asking price on Aston Villa target Glenn Whelan, according to reports from The Sentinel.

City recently acquired the services of Darren Fletcher from West Bromwich Albion on a free transfer and his arrival means that the long serving Glenn Whelan has been made surplus to requirements.

Championship side Aston Villa are interested in signing Whelan this summer, having placed a £500,000 offer.

But reports claim that Stoke City are holding out for a fee of around £1million for the 33-year-old Republic of Ireland international.
